This is an-easy-to use piece of apparatus for determining the speed of sound in air. The unit contains of two sensitive, amplified microphones connected to control circuity that will start and stop a Lascells Millisecond Timer. Alternatively, the outputs may be monitored on a storage or PC oscilloscope. In use, a sharp sound is produced in line with the two microphones. The time recorded on the Millisecond Timer is then the time taken for the sound to travel between the two microphones. Using the formula:
speed = distance / time
a value for the speed of sound can be calculated. This can be done for one single reading as a teacher demo, or a plot of distance against time can be used to determine the speed of sound more accurately via a student experiment.
When using an oscilloscope, the time between the signals from the two microphones can be measured manually, using the time-base and the distance between the peak voltage signals.
The Speed of Sound apparatus is supplied with a 9 V PP3 battery, a 6 metre connecting cable and full instructions.
