Loudspeaker Kit

Test real world principles of electromagnetism by building your own working loudspeakers. With each component being re-usable, this comprehensive kit facilitates an exciting hands-on speaker building activity, time and time again. The kit includes components to make 10 speakers. 

What’s included:
10 x speaker bases
10 x neodymium magnets
10 x washers
1 x reel of enamelled copper wire
1 x crocodile clip to 3.5 mm headphone jack connection cable (stereo jack lead)
1 x sandpaper square

The speakers can be tested using the included crocodile clip to 3.5 mm headphone jack cable connected to a signal generator or transistor radio, or, when coupled with the wireless Rubens Tube Amplifier, students can wirelessly pair their phones to the amplifier, and choose their favourite songs to play through their speaker.

How it works:
Students first place a permanent neodymium magnet in the well of the speaker base, and secure with a washer on the underside of the base. A paper diaphragm is then measured and cut, and attached to the top of the speaker base. Next, students make their own coils by winding enamelled copper wire around a former, and attach their coils to the top of the diaphragm, directly above the magnet. Lastly, sand the tails of the coil to allow a good electrical connection to crocodile clips. On passing an AC signal through the coil, the coil is either attracted or repelled from the permanent magnet, depending on the direction of the resulting magnetic field inside the coil. The resulting moving coil speakers provide excellent output volume, and this exciting, achievable activity is sure to leave your students with a sense of scientific accomplishment. 

This activity can easily be extended by comparing diaphragm materials, or the number of turns on the coil.
