Multi-Wire Spark Detector MkII

The Multi-Wire Spark Detector provides a memorable and dramatic demonstration of the ionising properties of alpha radiation, making one of the key concepts in Nuclear Physics both visible and audible. Fine wires suspended above a metal plate form two electrodes separated by a small air gap. When a high voltage is applied, ionisation caused by alpha particles triggers bright, audible sparks. Bringing an alpha source (e.g. Americium) close to the detector produces a dramatic display of sparking, clearly demonstrating the highly ionising nature of alpha radiation as well as its short range and low penetrating power.

With its integrated high-voltage power supply, the Multi-Wire Spark Detector is easier than ever to set up and use. Simply connect to the mains – no external EHT power supply or additional equipment is required – making it an ideal classroom demonstration for secondary schools, colleges and outreach activities. Suitable for teaching GCSE and A-Level Physics, it provides an engaging way to support topics including ionising radiation, radioactive decay and the properties of alpha particles.

Alpha source required, but not included.

Key Features:

  • Mains operated – no need for EHT power supply
  •  Provides clearly visible and audible evidence of alpha radiation
